Accelerated Reading

The students at Southwestern Elementary School have the opportunity to participate in the Accelerated Reader program. The purpose of this program is to motivate students to read books at their individual reading levels and to improve their reading skills while doing so. Each student takes the STAR Reading Test at the beginning of the year to determine the reading level at which they begin the program. Each AR book is assigned a reading level and is worth a given number of points determined by the number of words in the book. After the students read a book, they take a quiz on that book and the score they receive determines the number of points earned and the level of the next book they read. Points can be redeemed for prizes and privileges. This program has been extremely successful with our students and their reading levels are improving.
