Demographics

Southwestern Jefferson County Consolidated School Corporation (Southwestern) is located in Hanover, Indiana, with a population of  approximately 3,600 and serves a district-wide population of approximately 9,400 people including Hanover College. The corporation began as a consolidated school district in 1959, including Hanover, Republican, Saluda, and Smyrna townships. Our community is primarily residential and agricultural with some small businesses. We are located five miles west of Madison, Indiana, and our school corporation boundaries include Hanover College. School buses run approximately 698 miles per day for contract routes, 137 miles per day for town routes, 41 miles per day for special education routes and 62 miles per day for a vocational route.

The Campus

The Southwestern campus is located on a 40-acre site in Hanover and houses a k-5 elementary, a 6-12 middle and high school, and a central office. Overall, student population is approximately 1,200 students. In 2002, we upgraded, renovated and added to our school facilities.

The elementary and middle and high schools are accredited by the State of Indiana and the North Central Association. The curriculum is comprehensive in nature and hosts many programs and opportunities for our students. We offer 15 high school and 10 middle school competitive sports programs for boys and girls in addition to elementary programs. We are a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association and, in recent years, have won a state championship and two runners-up at the state championship level.

Memberships

Southwestern is a member of the Madison Area Special Services cooperative, Wilson Education Center regional education center and the Southeastern Career Center vocational cooperative. Each organization enhances services that individual area school corporations could not provide on their own.
